Volkswagen Passat Performance Concept Previews New Sports Sedan

Taking a spot on the show floor here at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show is the VW Passat Performance Concept, giving Volkswagen’s large sedan a shot of adrenaline.

For power, a 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine powers the car with 250 hp, and sends power through a six-speed automatic transmission. Lowered sport suspension has been added, along with electro-mechanical steering to give the Passat some track-ready capabilities.

Along with the added performance, comes more style. The Passat Performance Concept gets dual exhaust, 19-inch alloy wheels, Bi-Xenon headlights with advanced front lighting system and LED tailights. The mirror caps get carbon applications, while inside, carbon-like inserts are found in the dashboard and on the two-tone seats, complemented by a black headliner and side pillars.

Volkswagen says that this concept will inspire a future “sports sedan,” which will likely be a performance version of the Passat, to keep the sedan up to the levels of the GLI Jetta and the GTI Golf.
