Volvo P1800 to Drive Three-Millionth Mile Today

The story of Irv Gordon and his three-million mile Volvo P1800 journey will come to a peak today as Gordon will reach the milestone while driving on the Seward Highway in Alaska.

The 1966 Volvo P1800 has been a story to watch for the last few years, ever since Gordon set the goal of reaching three-million miles in his car. The 74-year-old Long Island native and retired science teacher chose Alaska as a fitting backdrop for the achievement, as one of the two U.S. states Gordon hadn’t visited.

“I’m realizing this will be a record that no one will surpass and I’ve been feeling especially sentimental with these last few drives in beautiful Alaska,” said Gordon. “I’ve enjoyed the expansive landscape, a drive through the long tunnel to Prince William Sound/Whittier and a visit to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. The folks at Continental Volvo in Anchorage were kind enough to throw me a wonderful reception on Saturday.”

To celebrate the occasion, the Swedish automaker has launched a special campaign called “3 Million Reasons to Believe” that invites people around the world to visit the website and follow Gordon’s remarkable journey.

Gordon first reached the million-mile mark in 1987 and entered the Guinness Book of World Records in 1998 when his Volvo P1800 eclipsed the 1.69-million mile mark. In 2002, Gordon reached two-million miles in Times Square, New York.
