2015 Volkswagen Golf R Debuts in Detroit

The Volkswagen Golf R, the most hardcore version of VW’s little hatchback has just made its official North American debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show.

The 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine pushes the Golf R to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds thanks to its 290 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. Power goes to all four wheels through either a six-speed dual-clutch transmission or a six-speed manual.

While the motor is a tuned up version of the GTI engine, the Golf R gets a more aggressive steering ratio that locks after 2.1 turns, a “progressive” variable ratio steering system and stability control that can be de-activated for track driving. Chassis enhancements have also been made to this R version which sits 0.2 inches lower than the GTI.

For those who don’t want a car that is aggressive all the time, the Golf R comes complete with four drive modes: comfort, normal, individual and race. Damping, shift points and engine response are all changed depending on which drive mode the car is put in.

For looks, the Golf R sports 18-inch wheels, bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, an aggressive bodykit with LED daytime running lights and a four-tip exhaust.

Extra style comes to the interior as well, with the Golf R sporting nappa leather trimmed sport seats, a three-spoke steering wheel, carbon fiber dash inlays and a unique gauge cluster.
