There’s a public transport war raging in New York City.

The UberX service has announced that it has cut its fares by 20 percent, making it cheaper than a New York City taxi. According to the company, fares between Brooklyn to the Bronx and everything in between are now “the most affordable ride in the city,” noting that a trip from Grand Central to the Financial District will cost $22 through UberX while a taxi would run $24.

UberX is a less expensive service offered by cab-hailing app Uber that allows users to call for rides in “hybrids and mid-range” cars for a lower fare than the SUV or airport limousine service it also offers.

The company said that the lower prices are only in effect for a limited time, but that it would be more likely to keep the fares low if the volume of fares it takes increases. Last week the company also announced that it would slash prices in the Bay Area including San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose by 25 percent.
