If you’re a fan of current gas prices, there’s good news for you.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, this summer’s gas prices will be at their lowest since 2009 and it believes prices from April to September will average about $2.45 a gallon, a substantial drop from the $3.59 average last summer. As a result, the DOE estimates that the average family in the U.S. will save around $700 in fuel costs this year.

Currently, the national average is at about $2.39 a gallon, about $0.05 less than a month ago. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA)’s report also notes that annual motor fuel expenditures are on track to drop to their lowest level in 11 years. Expect the average fuel economy of vehicles sold to also drop along with the gas prices, as buyers opt for pickup trucks and SUVs over hybrids and electric vehicles when fuel prices are down.
