Porsche is tapping out of the horsepower race for its future GT and RS models.
Speaking to CAR, the head of Porsche’s GT division, Andreas Preuninger, hinted that the German automaker has no problems leaving the horsepower race behind.
“I’m not a believer in this horsepower monster, up, up, up, more, more, more,” said Preuninger. “For my personal tastes, around 500 bhp is enough, because 700-800 bhp calls for bigger brakes, sturdier suspension, it gets heavier and heavier logically.” While high performance specifications make cars sound more appealing, Preuninger points out that the power-to-weight ratio is more important.

He went on to suggest that future GT and RS models will focus on shedding weight rather than adding 50 hp every generation, targeting a certain power-to-weight ratio for each model. Don’t expect that to mean future Porsche models will actually have less power though, as Preuninger reassured that the company won’t go backwards.
As for the next-generation Porsche 911 GT3, don’t expect a turbocharger to join the lineup. Preuninger reiterated that the GT3 will remain naturally aspirated and future models will boast a manual transmission option.
