Justin Wilson has passed away at the age of 37 from injuries suffered in an accident at Pocono Raceway.
Wilson was airlifted to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest in Allentown, Pennsylvania Sunday evening following an accident where it appeared debris from Sage Karam’s one-car accident hit his helmet. It is believed that Wilson was possibly unconscious when his car hit an angled wall protected by a SAFER barrier on the inside of the exit of Turn 1.
Wilson had seven victories in his 12-year career in U.S.-based open wheel racing and was competing in his sixth race for Andretti Autosport this year. Wilson originally had a two-race deal for both Indianapolis Motor Speedway events, but the deal was expanded to cover the final five races of this season.
