The 2016 Cadillac ATS and CTS are getting upgrades that will help make them more efficient.
The American automaker’s two popular models will both get cylinder deactivation and stop/start technology, along with widespread use of an eight-speed transmission for the 2016 model year, all upgrades that are expected to increase fuel economy and reduce CO2 emissions by up to 6 percent.
Stop/start will be available on both the 2.0L turbo four-cylinder and the 3.6L V6. Instead of using the battery for stop/start, the system uses a “voltage stabilization system powered by ultracapacitors to re-start the engine,” which Cadillac says makes the re-starts smoother and quicker.

With cylinder deactivation, the V6 has the ability to temporarily shift to four-cylinder mode under light loads and normal driving situations.
Although the same 3.6L V6 will be used, the engine gets tweaked to offer a slight power increase of 12 horsepower and 7 pound-feet over the previous model, for a total of 333 hp and 285 lb-ft of torque.
Final fuel economy numbers have not yet been announced, but Cadillac estimates a 9 percent improvement over the current figures.
