Testing is underway for 2013 model year vehicles, with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) putting the new and redesigned vehicles through its crash tests.
The newly-redesigned 2013 Ford Escape and the 2013 Mazda CX-5 both got an overall rating of four out of five, giving both new crossovers decent, but not great, crash test results. Both vehicles earned five stars on the side-impact crash tests, but saw four-star marks in frontal testing and rollover testing.
New vehicles that have so far received five-star overall ratings include the Hyundai Elantra GT and BMW 3 Series Hybrid.
NHTSA plans to test 54 vehicles for 2013: 33 passenger cars, 16 SUVs, one van, and four pickup trucks.
