Most automakers are working on downsized force induced powerplants to maintain performance while enhancing fuel efficiency and AMG is following suit, though its newest powerplant will still be a V8.

A brand new 4.0-liter V8 is currently in development by AMG for various Mercedes-Benz models including the upcoming 2015 C63 AMG in addition to the new, smaller SLC sports car. The turbocharged V8 is based on the current turbo 2.0-liter, four-cylinder and will share the same individual cylinder capacity and bore spacing. The smaller four-cylinder is built for the Mercedes A45 AMG and CLA45 AMG models.

According to insiders, the 4.0-liter V8 will have over 450 hp initially, but will have the potential to reach over 600 hp. The V8 will eventually replace the naturally aspirated 5.5-liter V8 that’s currently found in the SLK55 AMG.
