It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the 2013 SRT Viper is almost certain to be offered as a convertible. Despite that, SRT brand boss Ralph Gilles is still playing coy.
Gilles wrote through his Twitter account today that “nothing is confirmed” about a soft-top version. He also said the chassis is “more than capable” in the same tweet.
The comment came after a story on Ward’s Auto was published discussing Chrysler’s halo car coming as a convertible.
“The car was designed to be a convertible,” he said to Ward’s Auto. “Under the skin is a convertible chassis. It’s already there – the stiffness is there. It’s extremely easy should that come, but we’re not in any rush.”
Despite not being in a rush, he also said SRT won’t wait as long as Dodge did in 2003 when it took four years for the Viper to come as a hard top after debuting as a convertible. Viper fans likely know that until now, the product cycle came in the opposite order.
