The push for improved fuel economy is coercing automakers into installing diesel power plants in their pickup trucks, and General Motors is following suit with the brand’s new mid-size pickups, the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon.
Earlier this year, a Chevrolet engineer let slip to AutoGuide that an oil-burning powerplant would arrive in the automaker’s trucks, though specifics were left out. Now, Automotive News is reporting that the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon mid-size trucks will be the recipients of that diesel power, about a year after they launch in fall of 2014.

That engine will be either a 2.5-liter or 2.8-liter four-cylinder Duramax turbodiesel, both of which are already offered in the General’s trucks overseas. In those trucks, the 2.5-liter unit produces 150 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque while the 2.8-liter puts out 180 hp and 346 lb-ft of torque.
GM is following in the footsteps of Ram and Nissan by offering a diesel engine in its trucks, though Chevy and GMC will be the only brands on the market to offer diesel power in a mid-size pickup.
