The Scion FR-S convertible has been delayed indefinitely, according to a recent report sourcing unidentified Toyota insiders.
First seen at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show earlier this year as the Toyota FT-86 Open Concept, the FR-S convertible looked to be a lock for production, especially since it was shown off at a dealer meeting. But for the time being, it has been shelved and is not in the Japanese automaker’s product plan in either 2014 or 2015.

However, with much of the engineering already completed, the FR-S convertible could be fast-tracked into production if upper management gives it the green light. One reason being speculated for the delay is that Toyota would have to add additional weight in order to make the convertible model rigid enough for production, which is against the FR-S model’s appeal of being lightweight and nimble.
The delay in production comes at a time when the Scion brand is in desperate need of fresh new product and when the FR-S coupe has quickly shot up to be the brand’s second best selling model.
