Cadillac will finally build a proper GT3 race car for next year.
According to a recent report from RACER, the American automaker has begun testing the replacement to the CTS-V.R, which will be a GT3 ATS coupe that is expected to feature a twin-turbo V6 engine under the hood. The new ATS will replace the Pirelli World Challenge CTS-V coupe, which captured back-to-back titles in 2012 and 2013 with driver Johnny O’Connell. O’Connell is also poised to make it three in a row, currently leading the GT championship with three wins this season.

The current CTS-V.R was designed specifically to race in the Pirelli World Challenge, but now more GT3-spec race cars are appearing in the series. The last six consecutive victories went to GT3 race cars and out of the 12 races, they’ve captured nine. Currently it’s unclear if the American automaker will offer the GT3 to customers similar to what other automakers are doing. One thing’s for sure, the GT3 ATS will have to live up to big expectations as the CTS-V.R it’s replacing will likely become a three-time champion.
