Mercedes-Benz is planning a less powerful version of its AMG GT sports car that will sit below the model slated to serve as a replacement to the now-gone SLS AMG GT.
First, the German auto maker will launch the more powerful AMG GT S, before offering a less powerful model that won’t cost as much, Daimler design head Gorden Wagner told Auto Motor und Sport during an interview. The AMG GT S will be powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 producing 502 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, but it isn’t clear what will sit under the hood of the less expensive version, although a de-tuned version of that engine might be a logical choice.

Mercedes is expected to officially debut the new AMG sports car during the Paris Motor Show in early October. So far, the company revealed details surrounding the engine, images of its interior and teasers that show the car either covered in a florescent green and black striped wrap or other teaser images. AMG’s latest range-topping performance product will be less powerful, but also smaller and ostensibly lighter than the SLS.
