NYC-SPEED-LIMIT

Driving on most New York City Streets will be slower thanks to a new 25 MPH speed limit.

City workers were out on Friday, November 7, putting up new signs to mark the lower default limit that is in effect unless another limit is posted on the street. The previous speed limit on streets without a posted sign saying otherwise was 30 MPH.

The city put up roughly 89 signs last Friday with a plan to place about 3,000 over the next year. A city spokesman told WCBS that traffic signal timing will be re-evaluated and changed if necessary to maintain traffic flow.

By lowering the speed limit, the New York City municipal government hopes that it will be able to to reduce the number of pedestrian fatalities.
