The National Highway Safety Administration is looking for whistleblowers with insider knowledge on the Takata airbag recall.

NHTSA is urging potential informants with knowledge “of possible defects or any wrongdoing” by Takata to step forward and has set up a hotline to accept tips. NHTSA is also promising legal protection to anyone who comes forward with information.

According to the report, six former Takata employees claim they were asked to hide or alter data on certain parts and materials that did not meet the airbag manufacturer’s specifications in addition to potential issues with key components including the inflators and cushions. Two of those employees also allege that they witnessed others hiding, altering or even ignoring negative test results.
