litte brother to fr-s

Toyota has reportedly confirmed that it is developing on a new compact sports car that will sit below the FR-S.

Being billed as a little brother to the Toyota GT86 (Scion FR-S), the Japanese automaker has begun developing the concept, the chief engineer for the GT86, Testsuya Yada, has confirmed to Drive.

Yada isn’t overseeing the Baby Scion FR-S project so he was unable to disclose more information but did say that the company hasn’t decided if it will be a two-seater or a 2+2 model. What he did share is that the new model will share the same DNA as the GT86, that is a fun-to-drive, rear-wheel drive sports car with a focus on handling.

As for size, expect the new model to be a city-sized coupe that will fit in on narrow streets. It’s also too early to say what will power the model, but it is likely that Toyota will find a way to integrate a hybrid system to help boost performance, similar to what’s found on its Le Mans race car.

Toyota is promising a trio of sports car models which will include the new compact sports car, the existing GT86 and the revived Supra. The Supra is expected to be powered by a hybrid powertrain with a 3.5-liter V6 engine.
