Cadillac has confirmed that it is working on a smaller model to slot under the ATS sedan.
The new car is aimed at competing against the likes of the Mercedes-Benz CLA and Audi A3, but unlike those German cars that are front-wheel drive, Cadillac’s model will send power to the rear wheels. The confirmation comes from Cadillac executive chief engineer Dave Leone, who recently told Road & Track in an interview that the American automaker is “working on something below ATS.” Expect the new sedan to ride on the same Alpha platform that is being used for the ATS and CTS models.

Considering the platform also underpins the Chevrolet Camaro, GM has the experience to bring a vehicle to market built on the Alpha platform for around $30,000. The big question is whether the sedan will be roomy enough to compete against the CLA and A3, which have fairly large back seats.
In recent years, the entry-level luxury market has expanded but not very many automakers are focusing on rear-wheel-drive sedans, especially in the $30,000 range.
