The new Mercedes-AMG E63 will come standard with 4MATIC four-wheel drive, but that doesn’t mean that added traction all the time.
Scheduled to bow at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show early next year, the Mercedes-AMG E63 will have a fully variable drivetrain setup that is capable of sending 100 percent of its power to the rear wheels. “It is four-wheel drive and we’re going to have a Drift Mode,” company chairman Tobias Moers told Autocar. The Drift Mode will provide added torque to the rearward bias of the drive to create a slide, similar to the system found in the new Ford Focus RS.
The combination of the German automaker’s 4MATIC system and Drift Mode will help make the E63’s handling better than ever, Moers claims. He went on to say that the new sedan will be capable of lapping the Nurburgring in under 7:50.

In terms of performance, Moers hinted that at least one variant of the E63 will push above 600 horsepower, which was leaked previously. Under the hood will be a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, replacing the larger 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 currently used.
