The upcoming Mercedes-Benz pickup truck will sport the X-Class nameplate.
Originally rumored to be called the GLT, the German automaker debuted the X-Class Truck Concept last week and parent company Daimler has now filed to trademark X-Class, X200, X250 and X350 in Canada. All filings say “proposed use in Canada on goods (2),” with the 2 referring to “(2) automobiles and their integral and replacement parts 12.” Interestingly, the filings for X200, X250 and X350 say automobiles and not trucks, although the X-Class filing uses the same wording.

The trademark filings also note that the nameplates were registered in or for Germany in 2011, although the trademark filings in Canada were done earlier this month.
The Mercedes X-Class Truck Concept previewed the German automaker’s entry into the luxury pickup truck market, and is based on the Nissan Navara. The company plans to launch the X-Class in Argentina, Brazil, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Europe by late 2017, and at the time of the concept’s debut, the decision to bring the truck to the U.S. was still undecided. The recent trademark filings in Canada could just be to protect the nameplate from being used by another company, but it could also hint that a decision for the North American market is near – or at least Canada specifically.
It wouldn’t be the first time that Mercedes launched a vehicle in Canada ahead of the US market, as the B-Class hatchback has been available in Canada since 2005 and is available in the USA only as a niche electric drive model.
