Cummins has beat Tesla to the punch in debuting an all-electric semi.
Popular for its diesel engines, Cummins unveiled its next generation of energy-diverse products and technology solutions, headlined by the AEOS semi-truck. The fully-electric class 7 demonstration Urban Hauler Tractor, as the company calls it, runs on an electric motor and a 140-kWh battery pack. It is capable of hauling up to 44,000 pounds of cargo, but even with the 140-kWh battery pack, it has a 100-mile range. The company is looking at solar panels to extend the range of its semi-truck, and there’s the possibility of adding extra packs to extend the distance to 300 miles.

Still, this is a concept which means Cummins has time to further develop and match or beat whatever Tesla has in the works. Tesla hasn’t revealed very many details on its semi-truck, but there have been reports the automaker is getting ready to test its self-driving features on roadways. Tesla is anticipating a 200- to 300-mile range with its offering.
