The Hyundai Elantra is a popular compact car from the Korean automaker that is available as both a sedan and a hatchback, called the Elantra GT. It competes with cars like the popular Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and Mazda3. The compact is currently in its sixth generation and has been in production since 1991. It sits between the subcompact Accent, three-door Veloster hatchback, and mid-size Sonata in the Hyundai lineup.
The front-wheel-drive, front-engined compact car used to have a reputation for being cheap and not much else, but the lineup has really grown up into a solid offering that is reliable, packed with upmarket features, has decent driving dynamics and a high-quality build and interior. The Elantra has won several awards in quality surveys. There are also a few different engine options for both the Elantra and Elantra GT on offer that range from efficient to performance-oriented.
The model was recently refreshed for 2019, giving it a new exterior look that was quite controversial, and some important standard safety features were also added for the 2020 model. The 2020 model also lost the manual transmission option and ushered in a more efficient CVT.
Since its launch in 1991, more than 3 million units of the Hyundai Elantra have been sold in the U.S. The Hyundai Elantras sold in North America are built in Alabama, while the Elantra GT is built in Ulsan, South Korea.
